APD In-Service Training Hours Explained (8, 20, 4)
- Applies to
- Group-home & community-services staff
- How often
- Hours per fiscal year
In-service is an hours target per year, not a certificate: 8 hours for group-home staff, 20 for behavioral-focused homes, 8 for Supported Living coaches, and 4 for Personal Supports.
Unlike a course that expires on a date, in-service is a running total of training hours staff must accumulate across the year. Group-home staff need 8 hours; staff at behavioral-focused homes need 20 (APD iBudget Handbook, Appendix B).
Community services have their own targets: Supported Living coaches need 8 hours and Personal Supports staff need 4 (iBudget Handbook, Appendix C).
The Handbook says 'annual' without pinning the 12-month window to a specific calendar. Care Wizard accounts for in-service on the state fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) so there is one consistent, predictable cycle. The verified fact is the hour count; the July-to-June boundary is a sensible modeling choice — confirm what your regional office expects if you track it differently.
What counts is the question everyone asks next. APD lets you choose freely from approved topics related to care, rights, safety or service delivery — it is a menu, not a fixed syllabus, and hours from several short sessions add up the same as one long one. The topics Care Wizard pre-loads are: Pre-Service Orientation, Activities of Daily Living, Abuse Neglect and Exploitation, Comprehensive Emergency Procedures and Fire Drills, Food Sanitation and Safe Handling, Residents Rights, Elopement and Wandering, Emergency Response to Situational Awareness, Significant Consumer Changes and Incident Reporting, Safety Transfers, Sexual Activity Policy and Procedure, and the APD Incident Management System (IMS) Provider Portal course. You can add your own alongside them.
None of those is a separate requirement with its own renewal date, and it is worth being clear about that because it trips people up: they are ways to spend the same annual hours. The only thing with a deadline is the hour total.
