Insulin Is Now Its Own APD Credential (Rule 65G-7.004, March 2026)

Insulin is not covered by Basic Medication Administration. Rule 65G-7.004, as amended effective 26 March 2026, gives it a separate course, a separate validation and a separate annual update course — and unlike every other route, a temporary validation cannot be issued for it.

Being a MAP is three parallel tracks, not one credential: Basic Medication Administration, prescribed enteral formula, and insulin. Each side track is in addition to the basic one, and each carries its own course, its own separate validation, and its own annual update.

For insulin specifically: the course is required under 65G-7.004(4), with an exam needing 90% on course content and 100% on the APD Insulin Administration Log section — a higher bar than the 85% used elsewhere. The hands-on validation is separate again, under 65G-7.004(5)(d) and (6)(c). The annual update course sits at 65G-7.004(7)(a)3., and completing it earns APD Form 65G-7.004 C — a certificate dated March 2026, which simply did not exist before the amendment.

The revalidation timing rule is the same one that catches people on basic medication administration: it has to fall in the 60 days immediately before the current validation expires. Too early does not count. A first validation has its own clock — within 180 days of finishing the course.

Trainers and validation trainers are obtained through your APD Regional Office; ask for the MCM.

There is no safety net on insulin. Rule 65G-7.004(8)(d) carves it out of temporary validation — for most routes a nurse or physician can sign one to cover a staff member for up to 30 days, but not for this. If an insulin validation lapses, that person cannot give insulin at all until they retake the course and revalidate. Worth knowing before it happens on a Friday night.
