3 Training-Renewal Myths That Quietly Fail Group Homes

Some of the most confidently-repeated 'facts' about APD training renewals are wrong — and following the myth instead of the rule is what trips homes up.

A surprising amount of group-home compliance folklore is simply wrong — repeated confidently at conferences and in Facebook groups until it feels like fact. Following the folklore instead of the actual rule is a quiet way to end up out of compliance. Three of the most common:

Myth 1: "Zero Tolerance is annual."

It isn't. Zero Tolerance training renews every 3 years, per APD's provider review tooling. Retaking it annually wastes staff time; assuming it's good for years when your source actually said annual is worse. Know your real cadence: three years.

Myth 2: "HIV/AIDS training renews every 2 years."

For unlicensed direct-care staff at a Chapter 393 facility, the FDOH HIV/AIDS course is one-time (F.S. 381.0035). The biennial HIV/AIDS continuing-education requirement people are thinking of (F.S. 456.033) applies to licensed health-care practitioners at relicensure — not your direct care staff. Tracking a two-year renewal that doesn't exist creates phantom "overdue" noise; the real risk is never logging the one-time course at all.

Myth 3: "As long as med validation gets done that year, we're fine."

Medication administration validation is annual — but the timing is strict (Rule 65G-7.004). It must fall in the 60 days immediately before the current validation expires. Done too early, it doesn't count. Let it lapse and staff cannot pass medications until they retake the full Basic Medication Administration course.

The medication window is a real inspection finding, not a technicality — revalidate inside the 60-day window, every year, for every med-passing staff member.
